ISRCTN54055321

This trial aims to investigate the effect of donated limbal stem cells patients with corneal blindness. The trial is being conducted at the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion in Edinburgh, Scotland. Participants will be randomly assigned to either an experimental or a control group. The experimental group will be treated with a membrane from donated placenta (human amniotic membrane) containing donated limbal stem cells. The control group will be treated with the membrane only. Neither the doctors nor the participants will be aware of which treatment each subject has undergone. Participants will be assessed regularly over an 18 month period for complications and for improvement in vision and changes in the cornea. The trial commenced in February 2012 and expects to enrol 20 participants by December 2013.
