This pilot clinical trial is designed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of transplanting bone marrow stem cells into the eyes patient’s with irreversible vision loss from various retinal degenerative conditions including macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, diabetic retinopathy or retinal vein occlusion. The trial is being conducted by the University of California Davis. Participants will receive their own cells, isolated from their bone marrow, directly into the eye (intravitreal injection). Participants will be monitored for complications including infection and tumour growth, as well as structural evidence of successful engraftment and changes to vision. The trial expects to enrol 15 subjects by December 2013.
