Research focus: Reproductive tract stem cells

Associate Professor Pradeep Tanwar is an NHMRC Career Development Fellow and the group leader of the Gynaecology Oncology program, University of Newcastle.  A/Prof Tanwar was originally trained in Veterinary Medicine and then obtained his Ph.D. in Reproductive Tract Biology.  After completing his Ph.D., he undertook a postdoctoral fellowship in Gynaecology Oncology at the Harvard Medical School, USA.  In August 2012, A/Prof Tanwar relocated from Harvard Medical School and joined, as a tenured faculty at the University of Newcastle. The major focus of his research is on elucidating the molecular players involved in the pathogenesis of ovarian and endometrial cancers with special emphasis on the role of stem/progenitor cells.  His group is using genetically modified mouse models, cancer patient-derived xenograft models, organoids, and primary human tissue samples to define the molecular and cellular events involved in carcinogenesis and then using this knowledge to develop targeted therapies to improve clinical outcomes in human patients.
