I completed a Bachelor of Science with Honours at UQ in 2012. My PhD project focuses on regenerating the heart after heart attack. During heart attack, contractile-cells of the heart die. These cells are called cardiomyocytes and once they die, they are rarely replaced. Hence the adult heart is irrevocably damaged after heart attack. In comparison, neonatal mice regenerate after heart attack by replacing cardiomyocytes. My PhD-project has identified molecular drivers of neonatal mouse cardiac regeneration and by utilising these drivers, we hope to reprogram the adult mammalian heart for regeneration. I also began my medical degree in 2016.
