PRESS RELEASE: Melbourne To Host Major International Stem Cell Meeting

10 November 2015 (Melbourne, Australia): The International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) has announced that their 2018 Annual Meeting will be held in Melbourne and is expected to draw approximately 3,000 stem cell researchers and professionals from around the globe.

Commenting on the winning bid, ISSCR CEO Nancy Witty said, “The Australians, led by the Australasian Society for Stem Cell Research, submitted a strong bid, uniting local government, industry and the scientific and health communities to paint a picture of the vibrant professional and cultural opportunities the city has to offer. We were impressed by their unity, enthusiasm and the comprehensive nature of their proposal.”

“Further, Australia has a long history of pioneering and diverse stem cell research and is the home of many ground breaking discoveries and innovative companies,” Witty said.

Professor Martin Pera, Program Leader of the Stem Cells Australia initiative and Chair of Stem Cell Science at The University of Melbourne noted, “The announcement that ISSCR will  hold their 2018 meeting in Melbourne is great news for Australian stem cell science.  Winning this bid to host the premier international meeting in the field is a real honour for our research community.  We thank all our colleagues and our supporters in the public and private sectors who helped to convince the Society to come back to Australia in 2018.”

Many Australian researchers have had a long association with ISSCR. Dr Paul Simmons, now head of research and new product development at Melbourne-based Mesoblast, was the ISSCR’s president in 2006-2007, with many others contributing to ISSCR Committees and initiatives including Professor Andrew Elefanty – Chair, International Affairs Committee; Professor Martin Pera, Chair, Strategic Oversight Committee and ISSCR Clerk; Professor Melissa Little, Membership Committee and Associate Professor Megan Munsie, Chair of the Closer Look at Stem Cells Taskforce and a member of the Ethics Committee.

The meeting will take place 20-23 June in 2018 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, located on the banks of the Yarra River and close to the many attractions the city has to offer. It has been over 10 years since the ISSCR first visited Australia in 2007, when constituents gathered in Cairns, and Stem Cells Australia looks forward to welcoming the back to our shores and to highlight the incredible advances in the field since that time.

The ISSCR Annual Meeting is the premier international society for stem cell science, an organization dedicated to helping advance research toward new therapies. The ISSCR’s annual meeting provides an opportunity for approximately 4,000 scientists, clinicians, educators and industry professionals from over 55 countries to share new data, learn from peers and discover global advances within the stem cell field.

Stem Cells Australia is an Australian Research Council funded Special Research Initiative, bringing together Australia’s premier life scientists to address the big questions in stem cell science. Stem Cells Australia was established in 2011 by The University of Melbourne, University of Queensland, Monash University, University of NSW, Walter and Eliza Hall Institute for Medical Research, Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, The Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health and Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization.
