PhD Scholarships

Four Strategic Australian Postgraduate Awards (STRAPAs) are available to eligible students to undertake doctoral studies, as part of a new initiative to promote multidisciplinary research in stem cell biology and regenerative medicine at The University of Melbourne.

Applicants should be outstanding graduates in science, biomedical science, chemistry, neuroscience, or other disciplines related to stem cell biology and regenerative medicine. Applicants will need to be Australian or New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents who meet the University of Melbourne’s requirements for Research Higher Degree candidature and the award of an Australian Postgraduate Award.

The successful applicants will need to commence their candidature by the start of February 2012 and will also be eligible for a supplementary stipend top-up of $5,000. 

Available projects include:
Blood Stem Cell Development: Generation of an inter-lineage cross- talk model of haematopoietic stem cell development. Supervisors: Dr Samir Taoudi and Professor Doug Hilton (co-supervisor), Molecular Medicine division, Walter and Eliza Hall Institute.

• Neural Stem Cells: New small molecule regulators of stem cells in the central nervous system. Supervisors: Dr Spencer Williams Senior Lecturer and Associate Director (Chemical Biology Theme), Bio21 Institute School of Chemistry, University of Melbourne; Dr Paul Savage, CSIRO Materials Science and Engineering: Professor Martin Pera, Chair of Stem Cell Sciences, University of Melbourne

• Pluripotent Stem Cells: Oxygen mediated reprogramming of mitochondria in pluripotent stem cells. Supervisors: Professor David Gardner and Dr Alex Harvey Department of Zoology, University of Melbourne, Professor Martin Pera,Professor of Stem Cell Sciences, University of Melbourne.

• Stem Cells and Development: Stem Cells to Model Development of the Human Cerebral Cortex. Supervisors: Professor Martin Pera, Professor of Stem Cell Sciences, University of Melbourne; Dr Mirella Dottori, Centre for Neuroscience, University of Melbourne; Dr Lachlan Thompson and Dr Clare Parish, Florey Neuroscience Institutes

• Stem Cells in Brain Repair: Neural Stem Cells and Oligodendrocyte Progenitor Cells in the Repair of CNS Injury. Dr Tobias Merson and Professor Trevor Kilpatrick, University of Melbourne and Florey Neuroscience Institutes
